The stench of dark magic and foul deeds hung heavy in the air as Madame Zorba and her companions arrived in Constantinople. They were greeted by Professor Demir’s children, Toprak and Rana, who bore dire news. The professor had been stabbed by cultists from the Children of the Blood Red Fez, the very same who sought the cursed Whispering Fez. To make matters worse, they had kidnapped Demir’s youngest son, Barlas.
Time was of the essence. Not only did they need to rescue the boy, but midnight approached swiftly, the hour when Scott Myers was destined to transform into a ghoulish creature without intervention. Demir offered to decipher the final portion of the Whispering Fez while the investigators attempted the rescue at the Kasim Pasha docks. He suggested seeking aid from a rival of the cult known only as “the Frenchman.”
Madame Zorba, feeling the dark power of the Fez coursing through her veins, drained energy from Myers to fuel her own abilities. She confided in Viola Sutcliffe, sharing her fears that her fate was now inextricably tied to the cursed artifact. Per Oskarson, ever the skeptic, insisted on safeguarding the Whispering Fez himself, while Clyde volunteered to remain with Demir during the translation.
Armed with a letter of introduction from Demir, the investigators hastened to the Frenchman’s palatial estate near the Sultan’s Palace. They were greeted by a servant and escorted to a balcony where the heavy-set man lounged, smoking a hookah. Madame Zorba introduced herself and her associates, explaining their urgent need for assistance against the Children of the Blood Red Fez.
The Frenchman’s interest was piqued by the mention of the tomes and the Fez itself. He examined Zorba’s Fez closely, chuckling at her misfortune of being tricked into wearing it. The investigators appealed to his ego and offered him a chance to cause mischief to his enemies, as well as a copy of part of the Whispering Fez tome to examine. The Frenchman agreed to a fair exchange of information.
He revealed that his former student, Nisra, now styled herself as the “Daughter of Fate” and had been persuaded by Menkaph to seek the Blood Red Fez as a shortcut to power. She had cultivated a relationship with Ramazan, an exiled prince and distant cousin of the Sultan, who despite his syphilis and idiocy, harbored great ambitions. Nisra had set herself up on a hidden tenth island in the Prince’s Islands chain with a group of followers, likely in possession of multiple Fezzes.
The investigators debated their options for confronting Nisra’s followers, who heavily outnumbered them. They considered causing chaos on the island to prevent the cultists from showing up at the docks or attempting a covert rescue mission. Transportation to the island posed another challenge, as it required a boat to reach its shores.
Returning to Demir’s house, they found the professor hard at work translating, while Clyde had been diligently taking notes. They informed Demir of his son’s probable location and the daunting number of cultists likely present. Clinton suggested procuring dynamite and kerosene to even the odds.
Demir revealed that only those intimately familiar with the sea would know of a tenth island, as only nine were commonly known. He suggested his friend, a fisherman named Abdullah, might possess this knowledge and have a boat to take them there.
As the clock ticked ever closer to midnight, the investigators gathered their materials and set out to convince “Nine-Fingered” Abdullah to guide them to the hidden island. The fate of young Barlas, and perhaps the world itself, hung in the balance as they embarked on this perilous rescue mission, the cursed Fez whispering its dark secrets all the while.
Session Notes
- The investigators arrived in Constantinople and were greeted by Professor Demir’s children, Toprak and Rana. They learned that Demir had been stabbed by cultists from the Children of the Blood Red Fez who wanted the Whispering Fez. The cultists also kidnapped Demir’s youngest son, Barlas.
- Demir offered to decipher the final portion of the Whispering Fez while the investigators try to rescue Barlas. The exchange is set to happen at midnight on the Kasim Pasha docks.
- Demir suggested the investigators seek aid from an occultist known as “the Frenchman” who has an antagonistic relationship with the Children of the Blood Red Fez. The Frenchman lives in a palatial estate near the Sultan’s Palace.
- The investigators are concerned because Scott Myers is scheduled to transform into a ghoul-like state at midnight without intervention. They plan to have Mrs. Myers delay the transformation again.
- Per Oskarson is worried about leaving the Whispering Fez out of his sight. Clyde volunteers to stay and safeguard the book while Demir translates it.
- Madame Zorba drains power from Myers to fuel her own Fez powers, planning to use them to potentially control any Fez-wearing cultists they encounter. She discusses this and her fate being tied to the Fez with Viola Sutcliffe.
- Demir provides a letter of introduction that may help the investigators gain an audience with the Frenchman. He says the Frenchman trades knowledge for knowledge, enjoys pleasures, and values politeness.
- The investigators realize they need to leave soon to reach the Frenchman’s house with haste before the midnight deadline.
- The investigators, including Madame Zorba, Miss Viola Sutcliffe, Clinton Lake, Per Oskarson, and Clyde Corning, arrive at the estate of a Frenchman in Constantinople, seeking his help against the Children of the Blood Red Fez.
- Toprak, their guide, accompanies them and provides the Frenchman’s address. The investigators leave their firearms behind to avoid raising suspicions.
- They are greeted by a servant and brought to meet the Frenchman on a balcony. The Frenchman is a heavy-set Caucasian man with an elaborate mustache, dressed in local garb and smoking a hookah.
- Madame Zorba introduces herself and her associates, explaining they are in urgent need of assistance. She reveals they are opposing the Children of the Blood Red Fez, who stabbed Professor Demir and kidnapped his son.
- The Frenchman reacts negatively to the mention of the Fez cult, confirming rumors of bad blood between them.
- Zorba explains they hope to buy time to translate tomes that may contain phrases to destroy the Fez. She also reveals she is wearing a Fez and wishes to remove it before succumbing to its curse.
- The Frenchman is intrigued by the mention of the tomes. He examines Zorba’s Fez closely, having heard one was found. He chuckles at her being tricked into wearing it.
- Zorba and her associates attempt to persuade the Frenchman to help, appealing to his ego and offering him a chance to cause mischief to his enemies. They also offer him a copy of part of the Whispering Fez tome to examine.
- The Frenchman agrees to a fair exchange - a look at the notes and tomes in return for the information he can provide to aid them against the Children of the Blood Red Fez.
- The Frenchman quickly flips through the notes and apocrypha provided by Per, focusing especially on the hieroglyphs. He traces his finger along them but says he is not a scholar when asked if he can read them.
- The Frenchman tells the group about Nisra, his former student who calls herself the “daughter of fate”. She abandoned her studies under him, persuaded by Menkaph to seek the Blood Red Fez as a shortcut to power.
- There is a story that combining the Fez with a prince can lead to great power. Nisra has cultivated a relationship with an exiled prince named Ramazan, a distant cousin of the Sultan. Ramazan is a degenerate idiot with syphilis, but ambitious.
- Nisra has set herself up on a hidden tenth island in the Prince’s Islands chain off Constantinople with one to two dozen followers. The Frenchman believes they originally only had one Fez but may have made more after finding the tome in London.
- The Frenchman asks to keep Per’s notes for at least a day to study them further. Per considers returning himself to collect them and have an exchange of ideas.
- Outside, the group discusses options for confronting Nisra’s followers on the island, which is about 12 miles offshore and requires a boat to reach. They are concerned about being heavily outnumbered.
- Options discussed include causing chaos on the island to prevent followers from showing up at the docks, or attempting a covert rescue mission. However, the group is ill-suited for violence, with only Viola able to handle a rifle.
- Madame Zorba says she will stand in the back and cheer on the others, implying she won’t be directly involved in any stealing or subterfuge.
- Viola Sutcliffe clarifies that she never said she was going to steal and that she merely borrowed an ashtray and returned it.
- Per Oskarson fears their efforts at subterfuge will be hampered by the letter specifically prohibiting them from being involved. His thoughts are trending toward explosions when “they” arrive, though he admits he doesn’t have much experience with such things.
- The group discusses transportation options to get to the island, including renting a boat. Toprak says his father knows a fisherman who could help.
- They consider causing havoc on the island to draw people away from the dockyard confrontation. Clinton Lake is leaning towards this approach and is open to other suggestions.
- Nearby points of interest are discussed, including the Grand Bazaar, Blue Mosque, Imperial Treasury, Imperial Museum of Antiquities, and the Sultan’s Palace.
- They debate trying to involve the Sultan, who they recently learned may have a family member involved in the cult situation, but decide it’s too much of a long shot.
- Per contemplates hiding in the docks and seeing how many cultists he can shoot with his rifle, with Viola commenting that his research may have affected him more than realized.
- The group returns to Demir’s house. Demir is hard at work translating but has nothing substantial to share yet. Clyde has been reading and taking notes. Demir’s wife Selin is helping care for the convalescing Scott Myers.
- They inform Demir of the probable island location of his kidnapped son and the dozens of cultists likely there. Clinton suggests procuring dynamite and fire accelerant like kerosene.
- Demir shares that there are only nine known Prince’s Islands. If there is a tenth, only those very familiar with the sea would know of it. He is friends with a fisherman named Abdullah who has a boat and might know the island’s location.
- The group plans to gather materials and then convince “Nine-Fingered” Abdullah to take them to the hidden tenth island to mount a rescue of Demir’s son.
